Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Director-General, World Health Organization

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is director-general of the World Health Organization, elected to a five-year term in 2017. He previously was Ethiopia’s minister of foreign affairs from 2012 to 2016 and minister of health from 2005 to 2012. Ghebreyesus is a globally recognized health scholar, researcher, and diplomat with firsthand experience in research, operations, and leadership in emergency responses to epidemics. He has chaired the boards of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, and co-chaired the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health board. Ghebreyesus’s honors include the Decoration of the Order of Serbian Flag and the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award in recognition of his contributions to public health.
