Craig McLean

Assistant Administrator for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and Acting Chief Scientist, US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA)

Craig McLean is assistant administrator for oceanic and atmospheric research and acting chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), where he represents the US agency on international groups. He was previously deputy assistant administrator of NOAA’s National Ocean Service, deputy director of its National Marine Sanctuary System, and founding director of its Ocean Exploration program. McLean served 25 years in NOAA’s Commissioned Corps, led its planning for the Smithsonian Institution’s Sant Ocean Hall, and achieved the goal of securing a permanent, dedicated ship for ocean exploration. An attorney, McLean has also practiced marine resource law for NOAA. He’s a fellow of the Explorers Club and the Marine Technology Society.
